Hévíz – a thermal lake for all four seasons

Hévíz – the home of health and wellness in every season. Floating in warm thermal water on a cool autumn morning, or bathing in winter while clouds of steam drift across the lake – Hévíz is an experience everyone should try at least once. What makes the world-famous Lake Hévíz so special is that you can bathe outdoors all year round. Its healing thermal water has also given rise to a spa and medical tradition stretching back more than two centuries. The traditional Hévíz cure, modern wellness experiences, the protected woodland surrounding the lake and even winter canoe tours combine to make Hévíz one of the region’s most distinctive and unmissable destinations.

Hévíz – a thermal lake for all four seasons

A lake that gave rise to a spa town

Lake Hévíz is far more than just a thermal bath.

Fed by a natural spring, its water is constantly moving and continuously renewed, while the protected woodland surrounding the lake contributes to Hévíz’s distinctive microclimate.

The warm water is not really about swimming lengths. In Hévíz, the best thing to do is simply let the water support you: hold on to a swimming ring, float and enjoy the unusual sensation.

And the really special part? You can swim here in winter too

One of the greatest attractions of Hévíz is that you do not have to wait for summer.

The lake bath operates throughout the year, so you can enjoy outdoor bathing in spring, autumn and even winter.

In fact, many people find the colder months the most atmospheric time to visit.

When the air turns chilly and clouds of steam begin to rise above the warm water, bathing takes on a completely different character. A misty November morning or a cold winter’s day at Lake Hévíz feels entirely different from a summer day at the beach.

What makes the Hévíz thermal water so special?

The qualities of the lake are not simply a result of its temperature.

Alongside the mineral composition of the thermal water, its constant movement, buoyancy and hydrostatic pressure also play a role.

Floating in the water reduces the load on the joints and allows the muscles to relax more easily, which is one reason Hévíz has long been recognised as an important Hungarian centre for musculoskeletal rehabilitation.

Therapeutic bathing, however, is not the same as spending an entire day at the beach. If you would like to use the thermal water as part of a course of treatment, it is worth seeking medical advice about the appropriate bathing time for you.

The Traditional Hévíz Cure

What makes Hévíz truly distinctive is not only the lake itself, but also the medical treatment system that has developed around its thermal water over the centuries.

The Traditional Hévíz Cure begins with a medical examination and an individually tailored treatment plan.

Bathing in the thermal waters of Lake Hévíz forms the basis of the programme and, depending on individual needs, can be complemented by a range of other treatments.

Weight bath therapy – a Hungarian invention

One of the best-known treatments associated with Hévíz is weight bath therapy.

The method was developed by Hévíz rheumatologist Károly Moll. During treatment, the patient is suspended in the thermal water and, where appropriate, weights are used to provide gentle traction.

Thanks to the buoyancy of the water, this can be done without placing significant strain on the joints.

Weight bath therapy has since become one of Hévíz’s best-known therapeutic traditions.

Hévíz medicinal mud

Another natural treasure of the lake is Hévíz medicinal mud.

Mud packs are a classic element of the traditional Hévíz cure and are primarily used as part of treatments for musculoskeletal conditions.

Thermal water, medicinal mud, weight bath therapy, medical massage, therapeutic exercise and other physiotherapy treatments together form the comprehensive approach that has made Hévíz an internationally recognised spa destination.

You don’t need to be ill to enjoy Hévíz

Of course, Hévíz is not only about medical treatment.

If you simply want to relax, even a few hours in and around the lake can make a wonderful day out.

Alongside bathing, you can choose from wellness facilities, saunas, massages and various restorative treatments, depending on the current services available.

The protected woodland and walking paths surrounding the lake also make it easy to combine bathing with a pleasant stroll.

Among the water lilies

One of the symbols of Lake Hévíz is the water lily.

The floating leaves and flowers give the lake an almost exotic appearance, particularly in summer. While bathing, however, avoid touching them: the plants are protected and form an important part of the lake’s unique ecosystem.

And in winter, paddle along the steaming Hévíz Stream

One of the most unusual experiences in Hévíz begins just as the traditional watersports season elsewhere is coming to an end.

The warm water flowing out of Lake Hévíz creates a unique winter paddling route.

From autumn until early spring, organised canoe tours take visitors along the wild and atmospheric Hévíz Stream.

Imagine it: the air is cold, mist hangs above the warm water, reeds and winter scenery surround you, and you are gently paddling downstream in a canoe.

If it happens to snow as well, the experience becomes even more memorable.

Why only in winter?

There is an important conservation reason for the seasonal restriction.

During the warmer months, protected plants grow and flower in the stream, while the reed beds along its banks provide nesting habitat for numerous bird species.

For this reason, canoeing on the Hévíz Stream is not a year-round recreational activity. It is available only during a designated period and through authorised organised tours.

Participant numbers are also limited, so advance booking is required.

Two completely different sides of Hévíz

If you visit in summer, swim in the lake, walk through the protected woodland, relax in the park and enjoy a leisurely day in the spa town.

Come in autumn or winter and you will discover a completely different Hévíz.

Bathe outdoors in the steaming lake surrounded by cool air, then spend another day paddling along the warm waters of the Hévíz Stream.

Perhaps this is what best explains why Hévíz is so special: here, winter does not mean the end of the season on the water.

How much time should you spend in Hévíz?

If you simply want to experience the lake bath, half a day can make a very enjoyable visit.

But Hévíz deserves more. Bathing in the thermal lake, enjoying a wellness treatment or massage, walking through the protected woodland and stopping for a relaxed lunch or coffee can easily fill an entire day.

Anyone visiting for a genuine therapeutic cure should, of course, consider a multi-day programme of treatments planned by a doctor.

Bon Villa tip: Don’t think of Hévíz as a summer-only destination. Outdoor bathing can be even more atmospheric in autumn and winter, when clouds of steam rise from the warm lake into the cool air. If you visit during the winter season, book a guided canoe tour on the Hévíz Stream in advance. You can even combine the two experiences in one day: paddle along the steaming stream in the morning, then relax in the warm thermal waters of Lake Hévíz afterwards.

There is no real bathing season in Hévíz – here, water takes centre stage all year round.
