On horseback through the Zala Valley
Szentmihálypuszta lies on the outskirts of Zalaszentlászló, in the valley of the Zala River. The estate is surrounded by gentle hills, pastures and unspoilt countryside, making it an ideal starting point for trail riding.
The equestrian estate covers more than 50 hectares, and its surroundings form part of the Natura 2000 protected area network.
From horseback, you can discover a completely different side of Zala: woodland and country tracks, longer riding routes and beautiful panoramic views await.
You’re welcome even if you’ve never ridden before
You do not need to be an experienced rider to give horse riding a try.
The riding centre offers lessons for both beginners and experienced riders, with a modern 40 × 20-metre indoor riding arena available for training. This means that even less-than-perfect weather does not necessarily have to spoil your plans.
More experienced riders can join guided trail rides through the Zala Valley, with routes adapted to the riders’ abilities and preferences.
Spend a whole day in the saddle
If you are already confident on horseback, a longer riding tour through the Zala countryside can be a truly memorable experience.
Der Reithof also offers guided full-day rides, giving you the chance to immerse yourself in the landscapes of the Zala Valley. Through its connection with the Zala Valley Open Farms programme, some riding experiences may even be combined with visits to other farms in the surrounding countryside.
Prefer to simply enjoy the scenery?
If you would rather not get into the saddle yourself, you can still enjoy an experience with horses.
Horse-drawn carriage rides can also be arranged with advance booking, allowing you to explore the surrounding countryside at a more leisurely pace while still enjoying the atmosphere of the equestrian estate.
Families with children may also enjoy spending time on the farm, where the horses and the atmosphere of rural life can be an experience in themselves.
Horses, nature and country life
Szentmihálypusztai Lovastanya is not simply an equestrian attraction for visitors – it is also a working farm.
The horses spend much of the year together as a herd in large paddocks and pastures. Respectful care for the animals and protection of the natural environment are important parts of the estate’s philosophy.
Sustainability also plays a role: the farm has its own solar installation, which provides the electricity needed for its operations.
One of the Zala Valley Open Farms
Der Reithof is also a member of the Zala Valley Open Farms community. The network aims to introduce visitors to local farms and producers, traditional rural life and the gastronomy of the region.
This makes Szentmihálypuszta an excellent stop on a full-day tour exploring the Zala Valley.
After riding, stay for lunch
There is also a restaurant on the estate, which welcomes visitors even if they are not taking part in a riding programme. Its cuisine draws inspiration from the traditional flavours of the region, combining them with more contemporary dishes. Fresh, seasonal ingredients and locally sourced produce play an important role on the menu.
This means you can easily combine your riding experience with a relaxing lunch or dinner.
Booking in advance is recommended
Times, conditions and prices for riding lessons, guided trail rides, carriage rides and longer riding tours may change, so it is strongly recommended to contact the riding centre and book in advance before setting off.
Bon Villa tip: If you have never ridden before, start with a lesson in the indoor arena. If you are already confident in the saddle, choose a guided trail ride instead – discovering the hills of Zala and the Zala Valley on horseback is a completely different experience. Afterwards, stay for lunch or dinner at the riding centre’s restaurant.
Horses, nature, the landscapes of Zala and the flavours of the countryside – in Szentmihálypuszta, you can experience them all in one memorable day out.
