the Szajki Lakes

Eleven lakes in a forest valley

The Szajki Lakes lie on the outskirts of Hosszúpereszteg in a broad valley surrounded by woodland. The lake system is fed by the Csörgető Stream.

Originally, there were two natural lakes here, and the energy of the water flowing between them was once even used to power a mill.

The landscape we see today began to take shape in the early 1930s. The owners of the land at the time, Antal Zierer and Sándor Endrődy, had dams built across the stream in 1931. As the water was gradually dammed, the present-day system of eleven lakes was created.

From the beginning, the individual lakes were intended for different purposes: some were used for recreation and swimming, while others were dedicated to fishing and fish farming.

Head to the natural beach in summer!

Lake No. 6 is now a designated natural bathing area.

The beach has around 200 metres of shoreline and approximately two hectares of grassy recreation area shaded by trees. The shore slopes gently into the water, which deepens gradually, while the lake bed consists of fine gravel and sand.

The average water depth is approximately 1.4 metres, reaching around 1.7 metres at its deepest point.

During summer, the natural lake water averages around 24°C, offering a wonderfully authentic lakeside swimming experience.

The bathing water at Szajki Lakes is regularly monitored and received an excellent water-quality rating in 2026.

Boats, pedal boats and an active day by the water

If you do not want to spend the whole day simply sunbathing, you can also enjoy boating and pedal boating on the lake.

The grassy beach area offers additional sports and family activities, including volleyball and football pitches, table tennis and a playground.

In summer, the area comes to life, while the food outlets around the beach and holiday area make it easy to spend an entire day here.

Bring your fishing rod too

Szajki Lakes are not only a place for swimming – they have also long been a popular fishing destination.

Several of the lakes are used for fishing, including Lakes No. 4 and 5. Fish found in the lake system include carp, grass carp, pike, pike-perch, catfish, bream and crucian carp.

If you are planning to fish, always check the latest fishing regulations, permit requirements and which lakes are currently open to anglers before setting off.

Not just a summer destination

One of the reasons Szajki Lakes deserve a place among the destinations to discover from Bon Villa is that they are much more than just a summer beach.

The surrounding forests and lakeside paths are ideal for pleasant walks, while the wider area can also be explored by bicycle.

In autumn, the landscape takes on an entirely different character. The summer crowds disappear, the forests change colour and the sounds of nature once again take centre stage around the lakes.

In winter and early spring, the area is also worth visiting for a peaceful walk, birdwatching or nature photography.

Discover the wildlife around the lakes

The eleven lakes and surrounding woodland provide a varied range of natural habitats. If you enjoy nature photography or birdwatching, bring a pair of binoculars with you.

Outside the main summer season in particular, the quieter surroundings make it easier to enjoy and observe the wildlife of the lakes and forests.

A whole day surrounded by nature

In summer, Szajki Lakes can easily become a full-day family outing: spend the morning swimming, take a boat or pedal boat out onto the water, stop for lunch at one of the local eateries and enjoy a walk or some active recreation in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, anglers can spend the day enjoying a completely different experience at one of the designated fishing lakes.

Bon Villa tip: In summer, allow a full day for Szajki Lakes and combine swimming with a walk or some time out on the water. If you are staying at Bon Villa in spring or autumn, do not miss them either. Without the summer crowds, you can discover a quieter and more peaceful side of the lakes and surrounding forests.

Eleven lakes, forests, a beach, fishing and activities on the water – whatever the season, Szajki Lakes offer plenty of reasons to stop and stay for a while.
