Zala Valley

The Zala Valley is an ideal destination for anyone looking to relax in nature, away from busy tourist centres. Meadows, forests and rolling hills follow the course of the Zala River, while vineyards, traditional wine cellars and small villages create a wonderfully varied landscape around Zalaszentgrót.

Explore on foot or by bike

The area around the Zala River and the rolling countryside offers plenty of opportunities for both short walks and longer excursions. By bike, you can explore even further, following quieter roads between small villages, vineyards and natural areas.

Spring brings the countryside back to life, summer is perfect for shady forest paths and waterside escapes, while autumn transforms the vineyards and forests into a beautiful landscape of seasonal colours.

Fishing in the peace and quiet of Zala

The lakes in and around Zalaszentgrót also offer opportunities for fishing. A peaceful day by the water can be just as enjoyable for those who simply want to escape the everyday routine and spend a few quiet hours surrounded by nature.

Discover the vineyards of Zala!

Vineyards, traditional press houses and wine cellars are an essential part of the Zala hills. Leave the main roads behind, make your way up one of the vineyard-covered hills and take some time to look around. From many of the hilltops, you can enjoy beautiful views across the surrounding countryside.

Discovering local wines and regional flavours is the perfect way to complete your day out.

Horse riding through the hills of Zala

There are also opportunities for horse riding in the surrounding area. The rolling, wooded landscape provides a beautiful setting for riding and offers a completely different way to experience the Zala Valley.

Visit the Zala Valley Open Farms

If you would like not only to see Zala, but also to taste its flavours and get to know the region more closely, visit one of the Zala-völgyi Nyitott Porták – the Zala Valley Open Farms.

Local farmers, food producers and agrotourism businesses joined forces in 2018 to showcase the values, traditions and products of the Zala Valley. Visiting the farms gives you the opportunity to meet local producers, learn more about their work, taste and buy regional products and, during special events, experience a little of everyday rural life.

The farms regularly organise open days, tastings and various events, so it is worth checking which locations are welcoming visitors when planning your trip.

Please note that these farms do not operate like conventional shops with regular daily opening hours. Many can only be visited during advertised events or by prior arrangement, so always check the latest information on the official Nyitott Porták website before setting off.

Slow down for a while

You don’t need a tightly planned itinerary to enjoy the Zala Valley. Sometimes the best way to explore is simply to get on your bike or into the car, turn onto a quiet country road and stop whenever something catches your eye – a beautiful view, a tiny village, an old wine press house or a welcoming local farm.

Bon Villa tip: Set aside a full day to discover the Zala Valley. Spend the morning hiking or cycling, visit one of the Open Farms, explore a vineyard-covered hill in the afternoon, then return to Zalaszentgrót for a peaceful evening.

There is no need to rush in the Zala Valley. Here, slowing down is part of the experience.
